Unusual Artefacts
Mary, Mother of Jesus, is widely represented in Western art. This multiplicity of Marian images reflects the great devotion believers have to her. This devotion, evident during the 4th century, reached its climax during the 19th century, the period during which the Good Shepherd Sisters were founded
The Marian devotion is expressed in many ways: by religious feasts celebrating various moments of her life; in places of worship dedicated to her, such as churches, chapels, sanctuaries and oratories; and by numerous objects of devotion.
The Good Shepherd collection contains a large number of these religious articles: paintings, sculptures, statues, holy cards and medals. The Virgin Mary is depicted under many names: Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, the Immaculate Conception, the Assumption, etc. It is not always easy to differentiate one image from another.
